When I woke up this morning, I had no idea that I would be spending the night at the hospital beside my 12 year old daughter’s bed. She awoke with sharp pains in her tummy, which they suspect may be appendicitis.
As we read the Bible together, and prayed throughout the day, ushered from waiting room, to emergency department, to pediatrics ward, we were reminded of the song by Matt Redman titled, “10,000 Reasons.” My favourite line in the song, which has become a prayer almost every morning of my life over the past months, is, “Let me be singing when the evening comes, ‘Bless the Lord, O’ My soul, Worship His holy Name.”
Wouldn’t it be life transforming, perspective changing, and heart cleansing for you to accept every circumstance in which you find yourself, as being from the very hand of God Himself?
In Psalm 103, the psalmist literally commands his soul to ‘Bless the Lord!’ stirring up his inmost self to magnify the Lord. A little research about the situations which King David had overcome himself prior to penning this psalm reveals circumstances so dire, that it is highly unlikely that anyone reading this blog would be able to identify.
Many people who have gone through such difficult times would have turmoil whirling around in their soul. In fact, their natural inclination would probably be to curse the Lord in their souls. What a brave and bold stand King David took to command his soul to bless the very one who allowed the trying experiences into his life in the first place.
The truth is, that you and I need to command our souls to “Bless the Lord” both when times are good, as when they are trying. Tweet that
How quickly we forget to focus on and thank the One from whom all blessings come. How swift we are to turn our backs on Him, while we enjoy all His benefits, and for comfort and complacency to set in while all seems well in our world.
I’d like to challenge you today, dearest child of God, to look to God in whatever stage of life you find yourself, and to command your own soul to ‘Bless the Lord.’ How fitting it is to acknowledge His paths, accept His ways, and display your unconditional trust in Him, as He navigates each of your days according to His perfect plan for you.
Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation and my God.
