What You Should Know About The Upcoming Election

Very few subjects interest me less than politics. I’d say the only topics that my eyes glaze over more when talked about are insects, aliens, and possibly accounting. Then comes politics, and above that, thousands of other wonderful things… you get the picture :-).

However, this morning in my Bible reading, I came across a precious reminder that I wanted to share with you.

An historical scene of infinite proportions

In John 18:28-32 our Lord appears before Pilate, the Roman ruler at the time. When the Romans took over the region from the Jews in the year A.D. 6, the right to execute people was taken away from the Jewish leaders and given to the Roman governor.

The fascinating thing about this is that in earlier verses in the book of John, Jesus had said that He would die by being ‘lifted up’ (John 3:14, 8:28, 12:32-33). If the Jewish religious authorities had been in power during the time of His execution, they would have been throwing Him down and stoning Him.

Here comes the incredible part: God providentially controlled all the political procedures to ensure than when our Lord’s sentence was finally passed, he would be crucified by the Romans, and not stoned by His fellow Jews. So, Jesus’ prophecy to be ‘lifted up’ was fulfilled by Him being lifted up on a cross – all because God had sovereignly placed the Romans in power at that time!

What You Should Know About The Upcoming Election

This gets me so excited, because God goes to the trouble of proving to us in this, and many other accounts in the Bible, that:

“[Each of us should be] subject to the governing authorities.

For there is no authority except from God,

and those that exist have been instituted by God”

Romans 13:1

…No matter what comes to pass, or who wins this, or any future, election.

Does this exempt us from voting, you may wonder?

No way! God uses people to bring His purposes to pass.

But when you prayerfully cast your vote, you can peacefully know that the One who has throughout history raised nations up or caused their downfall, is trustworthy and true. He will fulfill His promises, perform His plans, and keep His Word.

I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass;

I have purposed, and I will do it.

Isaiah 46:11b

So, I guess that politics isn’t that bad of a subject to talk about after all 🙂 .

As long as we rely fully on God’s sovereignty, while still keeping our obligation as citizens to vote according to our conscience and towards the outcome that we believe will glorify God most.

How can we doubt the supremacy of our great God when we read in the Scriptures that He is “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.” (Ephesians 1:21-22).

In fact as God’s children, we will all rule one day

The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end,

to him I will give authority over the nations.

Revelation 2:26

Instead of being caught up in all the back-stabbing, backbiting, and bulls-eye ambition of these current elections, focus on your own political agenda – keeping His Words until the end, by loving and living them now, while placing your full faith and confidence in Him – The Eternally Reigning King.

How are you feeling about the elections? How would recognising God’s sovereignty change your perspective?
