3 Lessons Learned From My First Six Months of Blogging

This week marks half a year since I started this blog. Thinking back over this time period, I can clearly identify three lessons that I learned from my first six months of blogging and would like to share them with you in hope that they will aid you in your own blogging journey.

I believe these will be applicable to you even if you are not a blogger, so I invite you to read on :-).

1. Set priorities

I struggled so much in those early blogging days with whether I’d done the right thing by starting the blog, or whether I should have stuck with devoting my time and efforts solely to my family.

Blogging has taken a lot more time than I imagined it would, and juggling this task with family life has at times been a real challenge. However, I have had the guidance of God’s Word, my husband, and precious friends to remind me of what my real priorities are:

i.     Spending time with God in His Word daily

ii.    My husband

iii.     My children

iv.     My home

v.     Serving others

vi.    Whatever I have time to do after all of the above are   invested in and

nurtured – in this case, blogging.

I have not always adhered to these perfectly. It’s a continual learning curve, but through adding blogging to my life, I have really been forced to constantly assess my priorities and make sure that they are in line with God’s Word (Colossians 3:2).

2. You Can’t Pour Out If You’re Not Being Filled

Of myself, I have nothing to give. Honestly, I am a sinful, selfish, warped individual. I know that this is not exactly the kind of person you’d want to subscribe to read, and you’d be right not to!

BUT GOD….

God, by His infinite power, grace, kindness, and love, pours His Word into my heart and soul as I study and apply it, and I pray that it is His Spirit that rolls off the words of this blog on your screen, into your mind and heart…

If I do not spend time with Him, at His beautiful feet (Luke 10:39), then I don’t dare come near my computer and endeavor to feed you my own words – that come from my own deceitful and conceited heart. God’s eternal truths are all that are worth passing on to you. Those are the truths that are going to challenge, change and transform you.

3. Be Open To Learning

I honestly had no idea how much I would need to learn when I entered this sphere on the internet. The technical stuff is literally endless. New and improved versions of plugins, themes, social media, and strategies are being introduced at record breaking speed out there. And keeping up with it all can truly be overwhelming. Having a patient attitude to learning can greatly alleviate the frustrations and fears of all that comes at you as you blog.

But there is another kind of learning that I have done. One that is infinitely more important than techy talk will ever be; I have learned from you who read my humble words.

I have taken in the humility of the mother who has shared her painful story of miscarriage.

I have absorbed the wisdom of those who have taught me of their motherhood experiences.

I have learned to meekly respond to those who have maliciously attacked me for standing up for righteousness (James 3:13).

I have learned to forgive when hackers have taken over this private space.

I have learned so much over these past short months from others, and how to respond in love and kindness, as my Lord would have done. And these are lessons that I am so thankful that God has seen fit to teach me while doing something I love – from the comfort of my own home, as I tend to my beloved family.

I am also so blessed (understatement!) by the people who have chosen to subscribe and not “follow me” (as blogging jargon goes), but rather follow the convictions, challenges, and encouragement that I pray God uses me to share. A big thank you for reading, commenting, caring, encouraging, and being such an incredible blessing to me and other readers in this community!
